Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962
Oleg Penkovsky was a Soviet spy who secretly worked for the United States and Britain. During the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, he provided over 5,000 photos and documents about Soviet missiles and military readiness.
Penkovsky’s intelligence showed Soviet forces in Cuba were not ready for full-scale war. This gave President Kennedy confidence to take a tough stance against the Soviets. It revealed the Soviets had limited capabilities in Cuba.
Kennedy could then judge how far to go against Khrushchev before risking nuclear war. This reduced pressure on Kennedy to invade Cuba, which could have led to Soviet nuclear strikes.
